Question: Why do I need a license for my dog?

- It's the law - State law requires all dogs older than 4 months be licensed. If you get caught without a license, you may be hit with a fine of $50.
- If your dog goes missing - having a license drastically improves your chances of getting your dog back.
- The cost of the license is less than the penalty if your dog is found without a license.
- Licensing lets people know that your dog is up to date on its rabies vaccination and the vaccination helps keep dogs healthy and people safe.
Question: When do I need to purchase a license?
Answer: Licenses must be acquired by April 1st and must be renewed annually. Licenses are available for purchase or renewal starting after January 1st of each year. Any licenses not renewed by April 1st will be subject to an additional charge when renewed. Any dog owner caught without a valid license for their dog will be subject to a fine of $50 for a first offense and up to $500 for multiple offenses.
Question: Where can I purchase a license?
Answer: Licenses can be purchased at the Town Hall, located at 7900 Williston Road during normal business hours. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Licenses can also be renewed by mail, if coming in is not convenient.
Question: What is required when I purchase a license?
Answer: In order to apply for a dog license you must:
- Provide a certificate showing that your dog is up to date with its rabies vaccinations.
- Dogs over four months and older must be licensed.
- Pay the required fee.
Question: How much does a license cost?
Answer: The fee is $13 if your dog is spayed/neutered and $17 if it is not. After April 1st the fees increase to $17 for spayed/neutered dogs and $23 if not.
