-> FY 26 Town Budget Public Hearing 1.7.25
The Town will be developing its fiscal year 2026 municipal services budget for consideration at Town Meeting in March over the next two months. The budget is the spending plan for the community of how to deliver municipal services over the next fiscal year (July 1 – June 30th). Property taxes are a component of raising funds for the town budget, and taxes raised for the town budget cover about 15% of a homeowner’s tax bill. Education taxes make up the remaining 85% of the total tax bill. The Town collects all property taxes per state statute and sends the education tax to the State. Available to view at the bottom of this page are the draft operating and capital budgets transmitted by Town Manager Erik Wells to the Selectboard on December 3rd. The transmittal letter at the beginning of each document provides a comprehensive overview of the different elements affecting service delivery costs and revenue. It is a good resource for an overview of the budget discussion. The documents also include a line item listing of all spending proposals for Town Departments. The Selectboard held a budget review meeting on December 7th. At the meeting the Selectboard received an overview from each Department on its budget request. A recording of the meeting is available to view at this link. The Selectboard will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, January 7th at 7:30 PM to receive public comment on the budget prior to beginning deliberations to arrive at a final proposal for Town Meeting. The hearing notice is available at the bottom on the page. Expenses for each Town Department and service, along with the plan to balance the budget with revenue will be determined by late January. The Town Manager’s draft budget is a starting point for discussion by the Selectboard, not the finish line. Community input and feedback is an important part of the budget development process as the spending plan to finalized for consideration at Town Meeting.
