TOWN OF WILLISTON
CEMETERY COMMISSION
MINUTES OF MEETING
April 18, 2024
Meeting held in the Beckett / McGuire Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Williston Town Hall. MEMBERS PRESENT: Jack Price, Hazel Winter, Drew Nelson, Cameron Clark, and Shannon Hiltner ABSENT: None OTHERS PRESENT: HR Coordinator / Assistant to the Manager Erin Dickinson The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. The draft December 14, 2023, meeting minutes were presented. The Commission unanimously approved the minutes. The Commission reviewed the most recent fiscal year 2024 budget report that includes information current through February 2024. A motion was made, seconded, and moved to accept the budget information. Jack Price suggested that Shannon Hiltner meet with Town Clerk Sarah Mason to discuss the Veterans Burial Record Display Case in Deer View Cemetery and the possible involvement of the Boy Scouts. Drew Nelson and Price stated that earlier this week, they presented to the Williston Historical Society (WHS), the Morse Cemetery ground penetrating radar project for the suspected unmarked burials. They explained that the plan is for the Town to work on the discovery process, pending funding availability. If unmarked burial remains are discovered, perhaps the WHS could contribute to a monument and craft recognition text. Nelson and Price felt the WHS supported the concept. Cameron Clark inquired whether the ash trees in front of East Cemetery were slated for removal. Price explained that they were being treated rather than removed, and if the treatment fails, they will be removed. The Commission next discussed interments planned to date for the Spring season. Nelson indicated there are four scheduled and three pending confirmations. Price reported recently receiving an inquiry for another possible cremains. Price recalled that three tablets in Chittenden Cemetery are broken. He will contact James ‘Woody’ Woodman to repair them as soon as possible, as Woody had previously agreed to fix them in the fall. The Commission also discussed using endowment funds earmarked for East Cemetery for monument cleaning. Hiltner mentioned the Commission needed to create a symbol to be used on the maps for columbariums. The Commission’s next meeting will be held May 9, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library. For the remainder of the meeting, the Commission conducted their annual mapping session. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 4:46 p.m.
